About The Event

About the Exhibit

The original Resilience exhibit preserves stories of women who shaped Flagstaff through hardship, change, and care for their communities, from the 1880s onward. These women navigated economic uncertainty, social barriers, migration, discrimination, and loss while building lives, families, and institutions that held the town together.

Resilience Revisited extends this legacy by inviting contemporary artists to reflect on what resilience looks like today. This exhibition recognizes that resilience is not only an individual trait, but a collective practice rooted in community, memory, and lived experience.

By placing new artistic responses alongside historical narratives, the exhibit creates a dialogue across generations. It honors the women whose stories were often excluded from traditional archives while making space for present-day voices to reflect on identity, perseverance, and belonging in Northern Arizona.

Resilience Revisited asks us to see ourselves in the mirror of time and to consider how women continue to shape Flagstaff through leadership, creativity, and care.

Call to Artists

Resilience Revisited: The Women Continuing the Legacy

Presented by Culture Connection AZ in collaboration with the Martin-Springer Institute

Opening Reception: Friday, March 6, 2026 | 6:00–9:00 PM | First Friday ArtWalk

Venue: Historic Ice House, Downtown Flagstaff

Culture Connection AZ invites artists of all disciplines to submit original or existing works for Resilience Revisited: Women in Flagstaff Past and Present, a companion exhibition to the original Resilience exhibit.

Artists are encouraged to be familiar with the original Resilience exhibit or to view it online for inspiration: https://www.flagstaffresilience.org/copy-6-of-exhibit-1

Submissions may be inspired by specific women featured in the exhibit, women shaping Northern Arizona today, broader themes of resilience and leadership, or women’s lived experiences in Northern Arizona, past or present. (such as works dealing with themes of pregnancy, post-partum, menopause or perimenopause, women in the workplace, women's rights, matriarchal societies, mother / daughter experiences, etc). We welcome a wide range of interpretations and mediums.

Selected works will be displayed alongside the Resilience Revisited historical panels in March at the Historic Ice House. The exhibition will open with a special reception during Downtown Flagstaff's First Friday ArtWalk on March 6, 2026.
